Lens-Artists #246 – Still Life

I wonder who else has reflected on it, but the phrase “Still Life” is an oxymoron, or that when we capture a picture even of motion, it becomes still in time. Isn’t it? May be it’s the late hour that’s giving me these thoughts.

I guess, nobody bothers about these questions but everyone just implicitly knows what is meant by “Still Life” in the context of Art.

When I am travelling, then things which seems kind of “still” are the displays in the shop windows, especially at night. So I thought of pulling up some scenes that attracted me.

For instance, these beautiful ties and scarves in a window at Como, Italy. I wonder who are those people who can pull off ties like these, as beautiful and artistic as they are!

Or this very interesting display of a shop which probably makes customized clothing (boutique may be), judging by the giant sized thread reels, patterns and iron. But who knows.

These crochet monkeys along with some books in an Amsterdam shop looked very inviting, probably catering to a very young clientele.

Then one time, I was in Lisbon, Portugal and found these beautifully arranged Fado guitars. I did attend the Fado performances and enjoyed them. It was interesting that the style was different in Lisbon and in Porto.

And then of course, in any city, I love the souvenir shops – not to get the souvenirs but to see what is something that would be representative of the city/country. Like these roosters in Porto, Portugal.

This post is in response to the Lens Artists Challenge by Patti on Still Life. Thanks to Patti’s prompt, these photos saw the proverbial “light of the day” as in so many years since capturing them, I couldn’t figure out in which context would these pictures have any meaning.
