The Holy Cow

Literally, the Holy Cow – in no meaning other than the holiness of the Cow. I wonder how did that phrase become an expression of surprise in the English speaking world.

On the festival of Pongal (mid January), in South India, the cows and oxen get their special day of rest and worship, as a thank you for nourishing people and laboring all year long. It’s called Mattu Pongal. I met this cow in Bangalore.
