I happened to be in Trogir, Croatia in autumn and came across this intricately carved entryway to the St. Lawrence cathedral, known as the Portal. It was completed and signed in 1240, by the master architect and sculptor of the region at that time – Radovan. There is just so much to see in here. If you’d click on the image, you can see it in more detail. At the base are 8 people holding up the portal – supposedly representing pagans. Then there are lions (as best as the artist understood probably from descriptions available at that time there as to how lions looked like) – male and female on either side. The male is crushing a dragon while the female one is holding a lamb in her paws and the two cubs are sleeping below her. Then there are Adam and Eve above the lions. There are apostles, there are scenes depicting the activities associated with the months (only December to April). While most of the work was done by Radovan himself, some more craftsmen expanded it in the latter part of the 13th century.

This is my entry for this weekโs Thursday Doors photo challenge, even though the challenge is on hiatus for the holiday season ๐.
In this blog, I focus on sharing some of the photographs that I capture, often during my travels but also in the everyday life. If you’d like to read about my travels, you can find the stories on this blog – Reflections on the River.
Geogeous entrance! Intricate carvings.

This is an amazing entrance. The ability to bring such an interesting vision to life in stone is incredible. Even the ability to finish the project had to require very talented craftsmen. Thanks for linking. There won’t be a recap until January 8th, but this post will be included.
