While climbing up the hill to reach a castle, I came across this sign and wondered what is the significance of the donkey on the sign. Did it mean that whichever you go, it’s a donkey’s way?

Thanks to the internet, I now know something. As it happened, the vineyards in this region were not accessible by roads until the 20th century. So everything that the farmers needed, had to be carried manually on their backs. So from the 1820s, the peasants brought donkeys to the Steeger valley to help with the transportation. Now there are no donkeys but they are associated forever with the place 😉.
Nice! What would we do without the internet! 😊
